Sir David Green KCMG (Chairman)

David was Director-General of the British Council, the UK’s cultural relations organisation from 1999-2007. In 2007 the British Council had 240 centres in 110 countries and a staff complement of 7,500. From 1990-1999 he was Director of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). In 1999 VSO had 2,000 volunteers sharing their skills and experience in 60 countries. From 1976-1990 he worked for Save the Children in a variety of roles culminating in the post of Deputy Director-General. He is Chair of The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and on the Board of The Royal Court Theatre and the London University of the Arts; he was awarded the CMG in 1999 and the KCMG in 2005; he is a Freeman of both London and Freetown. He has a strong interest in theatre, international development, cultural relations and the visual arts and is married with three children.

Gay Cranmer

Gay has lived locally for many years and became a Trustee in 1995. She is a writer, teacher and psychotherapist and holds a PhD in Religious Studies from SOAS, University of London. She writes and teaches under her maiden name of Watson.

Liz Firth

Liz Firth became a Trustee in December 2004 and chairs Dartington’s finance and investment committee. Liz has more than 25 years experience in the charity sector, including senior posts at Shelter and as Grants Director at Comic Relief, where she was responsible for making grants of £40 million a year in the UK and internationally. She now works as an organisational development consultant for charities and an adviser to a number of grant-making foundations. Her clients include large national and international charities through to volunteer-led community groups, working on a wide range of priorities, including young people, mental health, older age, the environment, justice, peace building and social enterprise. Liz is also a board member of the Devon and Cornwall Probation Trust, with lead responsibility for public protection.

Sir Nicholas Kenyon

Appointed a Trustee in December 2004, Nicholas is currently Managing Director of the Barbican Centre, London. He was born in 1951 and read History at Balliol College, Oxford. He worked or the English Bach Festival and the BBC Music Department, and was a music critic on The New Yorker from 1979 to 1982. He was then music critic for The Times and The Observer, and editor of Early Music, before being appointed Controller of BBC Radio 3 in 1992. He was Director of the BBC Proms from 1996 to 2007. He has written about the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Authenticity and Early Music, Simon Rattle, and most recently wrote The Faber Pocket Guide to Bach and edited The City of London: A Companion Guide. He is on the boards of English National Opera and Sage Gateshead. He was knighted in 2008.

Patricia Williams

Appointed a Trustee in December 2007, Patricia has had a long and distinguished career in academia and international publishing. A former Fellow of Darwin College Cambridge, member of the Franco British Council, the first Publisher at The National Gallery and a member of the advisory boards of Waddesdon Manor and Princeton University Press.

Peter Mather

Peter is the BP Group Regional Vice President for Europe, and Head of Country, UK. His background includes trading, refining, marketing, shipping, natural gas, strategy and corporate affairs. His current role includes overall responsibility for the governance, reputation, co-ordination and integration of all BP’s activities across Europe.Peter is Chairman of BP Oil UK, BP Lubricants UK, and BP Norway, and sits on the boards of BP Europa SE, BP Spain, BP France, BP Italy and various other internal boards. He is also a Council Member of the Energy Institute and ICC UK and a Trustee of the BP Pension Fund and the Dartington Hall Trust. Peter has an MA from Oxford and an MBA from INSEAD, is married with three children and his outside interests cover the arts and most sports, from tennis to triathlons.

Dame Jo Williams

Dame Jo Williams’ lifelong commitment to the disadvantaged and those at risk in our society is remarkable. Her illustrious career includes being Chief Executive of Mencap, Director of Social Services for Cheshire County Council and Director of Social Services at Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. More recently she established the Learning Disability Coalition and is currently Chair of the Prison Reform Trust and a Non-Executive Director of the Department of Communities and Local Government.

Rob Sexton

Rob is CEO of the Soil Association Certification Ltd, the social enterprise arm of the Soil Association, the UK’s leading charity campaigning for sustainable food and farming. He has significant experience across a wide range of sectors including the third sector, entrepreneurial enterprises and corporations. Prior to joining the Soil Association, he was Chief Financial Officer at InforSense, a spin-out from Imperial College in London, where he raised in excess of £10 million of private equity investment.

Gerard Lemos

Gerard brings extensive experience in social policy, education, the creative industries and the third sector. He leads the research team at Lemos & Crane, working with professionals in social housing, local government, criminal justice, schools, voluntary organisations, trusts and foundations. The author of several books about social policy he received a CMG in the Queens’ Birthday Honours List in 2001 for services to the British Council.

Stephen Jones

Dartington’s fourth local Trustee, recent former Principal of King Edward VI Community College, Totnes, and a strong supporter of Dartington for many years, Stephen Jones was a founding and active member of the arts partnership Dartington Plus. His outstanding track record and experience bring a strong educational perspective to our work and a commitment to the local community.
