Sir David Green KCMG (Chairman)

David was Director-General of the British Council, the UK’s cultural relations organisation from 1999-2007. In 2007 the British Council had 240 centres in 110 countries and a staff complement of 7,500. From 1990-1999 he was Director of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). In 1999 VSO had 2,000 volunteers sharing their skills and experience in 60 countries. From 1976-1990 he worked for Save the Children in a variety of roles culminating in the post of Deputy Director-General. He is Chair of The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and on the Board of The Royal Court Theatre and the London University of the Arts; he was awarded the CMG in 1999 and the KCMG in 2005; he is a Freeman of both London and Freetown. He has a strong interest in theatre, international development, cultural relations and the visual arts and is married with three children.

Gay Cranmer

Gay became a Trustee in 1995. A writer, teacher and psychotherapist, Gay teaches at Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies and at the Karuna Institute near Newton Abbot. A Trustee of Schumacher College Foundation, Gay helps to raise funds for Schumacher College. She writes and teaches under her maiden name of Watson and lives locally.

Liz Firth

Appointed a Trustee in December 2004, Liz Firth was until the end of 2004 Grants Director for Comic Relief, which makes grants of around £40 million a year to charities tackling poverty and social injustice. During her time with Comic Relief, she had overall responsibility for the impact, quality and accountability of all Comic Relief’s grant-making in the UK and internationally.

Sir Nicholas Kenyon

Appointed a Trustee in December 2004, Nicholas is currently Director of the Barbican Centre. Formerly controller of BBC Proms, prior to this he was controller of BBC Radio 3. He worked for the English Bach Festival and the BBC Music Department, as well as working as a freelance writer on music, and was a music critic on The New Yorker from 1979 to 1982. In 2001 he was award a CBE for his services to music and millennium broadcasting.

Patricia Williams

Appointed a Trustee in December 2007, Patricia has had a long and distinguished career in academia and international publishing. A former Fellow of Darwin College Cambridge, member of the Franco British Council, the first Publisher at The National Gallery and a member of the advisory boards of Waddesdon Manor and Princeton University Press.

Peter Mather

Appointed in March 2008, Peter is Head of Country, UK and Vice President, Europe Region for BP. Peter’s responsibilities cover a broad area including government and public affairs, communications, compliance, crisis management and social investment for the UK. Peter is a Board member of the Energy Saving Trust, a council member of the Council for Industry and Higher Education, a council member of the Energy Institute, and a non-executive director of Blue Giraffe Press Ltd.

Dame Jo Williams

Dame Jo Williams’ lifelong commitment to the disadvantaged and those at risk in our society is remarkable. Her illustrious career includes being Chief Executive of Mencap, Director of Social Services for Cheshire County Council and Director of Social Services at Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. More recently she established the Learning Disability Coalition and is currently Chair of the Prison Reform Trust, a Non-Executive Director of the Department of Communities and Local Government and the interim Chair of the Care Quality Commission.

Rob Sexton

Rob is CEO of the Soil Association Certification Ltd, the social enterprise arm of the Soil Association, the UK’s leading charity campaigning for sustainable food and farming. He has significant experience across a wide range of sectors including the third sector, entrepreneurial enterprises and corporations. Prior to joining the Soil Association, he was Chief Financial Officer at InforSense, a spin-out from Imperial College in London, where he raised in excess of £10 million of private equity investment.

Gerard Lemos

Gerard brings extensive experience in social policy, education, the creative industries and the third sector. He leads the research team at Lemos & Crane, working with professionals in social housing, local government, criminal justice, schools, voluntary organisations, trusts and foundations. The author of several books about social policy he received a CMG in the Queens’ Birthday Honours List in 2001 for services to the British Council.
