On 31 May at 12 noon – The Dartington Hall Trust opened to the public for a glorious day of creative expression and exciting revelations – all set against the backdrop of the beautiful country estate and some much appreciated sunny weather.
1,500 people came up the hill to Dartington to feed their curiosity and indulge their senses – experiencing an array of different activities, from live music, theatre and dance performances, behind the scenes tours, information stalls, environmental discussions, social justice films and lively presentations and debates on the future of The Dartington Hall Trust.
Vaughan Lindsay Chief Executive of Dartington said, “Open Day 08 was really designed to showcase the pioneering work of Dartington and our future plans. It allowed us to share our aspirations and our challenges and I was really encouraged by the interest from the local community and the ideas being discussed.”

”Chair of Trustees Sir David Green said of the event, “I thought the Open Day was a cracking success – the atmosphere was extremely positive and everyone I met was very complimentary about their experience. I think we really got to grips with emphasising our charitable activities and demonstrating the range and depth of the work we do.”
The Dartington Open Day was a great family day out, offering real creative and historic interest, along with fun activities for kids and young people. Tours of the gardens, the Elmhirst centre and the rarely viewed Warren House were particularly popular, along with talks from Vaughan Lindsay and the new Director of the Arts, Peter Boyden.
Dartington’s rich historical legacy was a key point of discussion and celebration, along with the charity’s future as a creative centre for experiment and innovation, generating the ideas that will help address modern pressing problems, such as affordable sustainable housing, active retirement and environmental education.
Jean Hardy from the Friends of Dartington said, “The Dartington Open Day on Saturday was really splendid, so full of good things, and people you want to talk to. Dartington is such an alive place now.”
The Dartington Hall Trust would like to thank everyone involved in making the Dartington Open Day such a huge success. We would also like to thank all those who came along to find out more – please come back whenever you like – you are always welcome.
