Programmes of Work

The Trust runs a number of projects and activities focusing on the arts, education, ecology and research.

The Place

Dartington Hall Gardens
Open all year round, entry by £2 donation.

Archive and Collection at High Cross House
High Cross House is a modernist building designed by William Lescaze for the first Headmaster of Dartington Hall School. It is open to visitors between May and October. The Dartington Hall Archive, located at High Cross House, is open to researchers by appointment all year round.

Land and Property
The Dartington Hall estate is a mixture of arable and pastoral farmland, woodland and residential and commercial accommodation. The buildings and structures situated on the estate range in age from Deer Park Wall and Earth Works at North Wood which date from the Bronze and Iron Ages, to the main Hall which was built in 1388 to those properties which were built by the Elmhirsts in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

The Arts

Craft Education
A number of courses run during term times on bookbinding and printmaking.

Dartington Arts
A year round programme of arts, theatre and film events.

Dartington International Summer School
The five-week summer school runs during the end of July and through August, and participants can attend a range of courses or simply attend the evening concerts.

Dartington Plus
A major new initiative which is a partnership between the Trust, Dartington College of Arts and King Edward VI Community College in Totnes. This is the programme’s pilot year, and it has received £1 million of Arts Council England funding for an initial three-year programme.

Ecology

Schumacher College
a centre for ecological studies and for research and reflection on sustainable living. Courses run throughout the year.

Woodlands and Conservation
The Trust runs a number of projects and programmes concerned with conserving the estate’s landscape and with sustainable woodland management.

Social Justice

Research in Practice
the largest children and families research implementation project in England and Wales. It is run in collaboration with the Association of Directors of Social Services, The University of Sheffield and its network of over 80 participating agencies in the UK.

Research in Practice for Adults
Research in Practice for Adults (RiPfA) is a newly established research utilisation organisation for adult social care. RiPfA’s mission is to promote the use of evidence-informed practice in the planning and delivery of adult social care services.

Commercial Enterprise

Dartington Cider Press Centre
A retail centre based in Dartington which comprises fifteen shops and cafes in a village atmosphere.

Leisure Breaks / Conferences / White Hart Bar
Accommodation is available in the medieval courtyard for both leisure and business. The White Hart Bar is open to non-residents.

Property Management
The Trust’s property is managed by a wholly owned subsidiary company, Dartington Property Limited. The Trust rents out commercial and residential property it owns which it does not use for its charitable programmes. Any profits are used to support the Trust’s charitable programmes.

Totnes Bookshop
Situated in the centre of Totnes High Street, Totnes Bookshop stocks a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books.
