Sir David Green – Meet Our Chairman

On 1st January 2008, Sir David Green took over as Chair of Dartington Hall Trust. Everyone at Dartington is looking forward to working with Sir David on shaping and delivering a shared vision for the estate. A Trustee since 2006, David’s long-standing connection with, affinity for and distinguished career pave the way for exciting times ahead for the Trust.

In March 2007 David stepped down as Director-General of the British Council after eight years. The British Council is the UK’s organisation charged with promoting cultural relations and building mutually beneficial relationships between the UK and the 110 countries in which it operates. It has 7,500 staff, 225 centres and a budget of £500 million. Building relationships by forging and fostering individual and institutional connections through the arts, education, science, human rights and governance.

Prior to leading the British Council, David was Director of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) for nine year, which in 1999, the year he left, sent two thousand volunteers to sixty countries to share their skills and experience. And before VSO, David worked for Save the Children for thirteen years in a variety of roles, culminating in the post of Deputy Director-General.

David trained as a teacher and worked in two comprehensive schools in South Yorkshire. One of these was Northcliffe Comprehensive School in Conisborough, which was linked to Dartington Hall School and it was through the exchange programme that he first encountered Dartington.

Married to a retired primary school teacher with three daughters, David has a strong interest in international affairs and the arts and is a keen amateur painter. As well as being chair of Dartington he is on the boards of the Royal Court Theatre, the London University of the Arts and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

David is very excited about taking on the role of Chair, as he believes passionately in the aims and ethos of Dartington and its potential.
