Abundant Life Development Forum 14 March 2012

On 14 March 2012 Abundant Life had its first Development Forum Meeting at South Hams District Council. The Development Forum is a part of the planning process which allows us to present our plans for the project to elected Councillors, Council Officers and local people, and for them to ask questions in return before we submit planning application.

The presentation started with some background information on the project and an outline of our aspirations for the finished scheme delivered by Celia Atherton, Director of Social Justice. Celia’s presentation can be found on pages 1 to 9 of the above document. Celia then handed over to our architects who talked through the rest of the presentation, concentrating on the design and development of the scheme so far.

First of all, Anne-Marie Nicholson from PRP Architects explained the site at Foxhole and the opportunities and limitations it provides, her slides can be found on pages 10 to 25. Following that, Mark Walker, also of PRP Architects explained more about the specific design opportunities that our scheme offers and the way in which the design contributes to achieving our overall aspirations of an inclusive, thriving residential community. Mark showed the slides on pages 26 to 32 whilst speaking to the Forum.

Stephen Bond, our Heritage Consultant then offered his assessment of the design so far and explained the architectural value it could bring to the listed buildings at Foxhole. Stephen worked through the slides on pages 33 to 41 which show many photos of Foxhole from our archives. As well as showing other buildings designed by the celebrated original architects of Foxhole – Milne, who designed the school buildings and Lescaze, the architect of the gymnasium – these photos show the listed parts of Foxhole and the later 1960s additions.

Lastly, Landscape Architect Tom Delhanty, talked through pages 42 to 56 showing the results of a Visual Impact Assessment carried out on the proposed scheme. A particularly wide study, extending to a 2km radius of the main Foxhole site, the computer generated photo-montage images show the impact that our proposed buildings could have on the landscape and views of the site from various vantage points. The study took into account some popular local public spaces including the public footpath cutting across Dartington. (Please note that the images shown on these slides indicate the position and scale of the proposed buildings and do not show any design detail at this stage).

Formal notes from the Development Forum will be produced by South Hams District Council and, once available, we’ll point you in their direction. If in the meantime you have any questions or comments which could help us refine our design work please do get in touch by emailling abundantlife@dartington.org or calling us on 01803 847049.
