The Plans

General information about Abundant Life from the public consultation meeting

Abundant Life proporal initial plan

We have spent many months working with our team and consulting with you to get our design for the buildings at Foxhole right. There are many important issues to consider including transport to and from as well as travel around the site, sustainability, wildlife and conservation and community development. The drawings around this page show the scheme as of December 2011, please click on them to find out more.

You can also see how the designs have progressed in the presentation we delivered to South Hams Council Development Forum by clicking here

What will the scheme provide?

  • 170 Apartments
  • Small Business Units
  • Extensive communal spaces
  • Children’s Nursery
  • Specialist Dementia Care Unit
  • Community Garden
  • Residents Gym
  • Outdoor Piazza
  • Restaurant
  • Range of flexible activity and craft rooms

Of course, these plans are not set in stone. We will submit our planning application in December 2012 and between now and then we will continue to talk to you and work together to fine tune these designs. As always we are keen to know what you think especially if you have any questions or suggestions to help us improve on what we have. I see what is termed as a “Spa Pool”. What is a ‘spa pool’ as opposed to a swimming pool, and how big is it? Can I do my daily lengths for instance?

- Michelle Meredith (Abundant Life Community Liaison Officer) Hi Lee, a swim spa is a small pool which allows you to swim against a current. The current is adjustable to individual abilities, strength and preference and so you can still get the exercise you need and want but no lengths to swim. We've looked into the possibility of a full sized swimming pool in Abundant Life but the cost of installing and maintaining it will make it a very expensive option for residents.

We found the consultation exhibition in Totnes most informative and fully support the ideas and the scheme outlined. We are both retired, aged 65 and 70 and currently fit and active, we both enjoy a range of interests. The idea of living in such a community at some time in the future certainly appeals to us.
As you have asked for feedback, here goes: 1) A principal concern is, of course, cost; we own and occupy a small terraced house in Ottery St Mary, a realistic market value is £170k. I was a concerned by a forecast average cost of £295k for a two bedroom apartment, would a part owned/part rented scheme be considered? We find ourselves in the position of having savings/investments too high to qualify for State assistance but not high enough to afford extra housing costs etc. 2) The idea of offering the opportunity to remain in the community for life with access to care and support services as required, including healthcare, is very appealing as, in my experience with other family members, moving to a new environment becomes more traumatic as one gets older and differing care needs can even lead to partners being separated. 3) Community facilities, especially a community kitchen and garden, sound like excellent ideas, how about sheds? Men with sheds live longer! Please keep up the good work, Brenda and I will watch with interest and I will let you have our letter to the planners shortly.
Best Wishes,
Tony and Brenda Rhodes.
