Dorothy Elmhirst served as a volunteer speaker during World War II. In 1941 she travelled to America with Leonard Elmhirst, speaking in as many as 80 towns and cities about Britain and the War. Returning to England, Dorothy served as a volunteer speaker for the Ministry of Information from 1942 through 1945, usually discussing America.
