This series contains records regarding the activities, achievements and the advisory role of Wilfred E Hiley in all areas, theoretical and practical, of woodland management and forestry. The records were primarily accumulated by Wilfred E Hiley through his role as advisor in forestry at Dartington (1931-1958) and chairman of Dartington Woodlands Limited, President of the Royal Forestry Society of England and Wales (1950-1952), and through his active involvement in professional associations including the United Kingdom Forestry Committee. Later records in the series were accumulated primarily by Leonard Elmhirst and concern the completion of Hiley's book, A Forestry Venture, the revision and editing of Hiley's book, Woodland Management, and the disposition of Hiley's collection of foreign books on forestry to the Oxford Forestry Institute (1986).
The records consist of correspondence primarily accumulated by W E Hiley. Correspondents include: Leonard Elmhirst; Professor H G Champion (tour of USA); C O Hanson; H T H Foley (The Dedication of Woodlands Scheme); R S Hosmer; J Adderley, United Kingdom Forestry Committee; R Gardner, Royal Forestry Society of England and Wales; and J J MacGregor, Commonwealth Forestry Institute.
Subjects include: appointments; Wilfred E Hiley's and Professor H G Champion's tour to the American west, sponsored by the Dartington Hall Trustees and the William C Whitney Foundation; Forestry Policy and Legislation including Post-War Forestry Policy; the Dedication of Woodland Scheme and alterations to the Dedication of Woodlands Deed of Covenant; a Forestry Conference held at Dartington Hall in 1957; Hiley's visit to Kenya to conduct a economic survey of the Forest Estates in Kenya (1949-1950) and his recommendations regarding a Forest Commission; and Dartington Hall Joint Council.
Additional materials include: memoranda; minutes; reports; an extensive collection of papers, lectures, articles, and reprinted articles by Wilfred E Hiley and a number of reprinted articles by Rudolph Lehtpere, Leonard Elmhirst, Robert Michael Harley; press cuttings; programmes; printed pamphlets; deeds; and grant applications.
Wilfred E Hiley graduated from Oxford University in Maths and Botany in 1908. In 1926 he lectured in Forest Economics at the Oxford School of Forestry until 1930. In 1931, after spending a year in America advising the US government on problems arising from the taxation of woodlands, he became manager of Dartington Woodlands Department. In 1946, when a limited company was formed, he became director of Dartington Woodlands Limited, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1958. Wilfred E Hiley was actively involved in a number of societies and association including the Home Grown Timber Marketing Association, the United Kingdom Forestry Committee, and the Society of Foresters of Great Britain. From 1923-1946, he was editor of the monthly journal of the Royal Forestry Society of England and Wales and president of the Society 1950-1952. In 1956, Hiley was granted a CBE in recognition of outstanding service in the field of forestry. He died in 1961.
