Artists in residence at Dartington

Spring 2011 Space Residencies

Space is a new Dartington initiative which extends our 80 year history of supporting artists from diverse backgrounds to produce work. Through Space we open our facilities to a wide range of creative organisations and individual artists who wish to develop new work.

We opened with a wonderful first season of artist residencies at Space with the following artists and organisations in residence:

English Touring Opera – Promised End
January 2010
ETO were in residence to develop Alexander Goehr’s new opera ‘Promised End’.

Dance South West & Youth Dance England Stride residency
April 2010
12 young dancers from the South West participated in a residential leadership and development programme.

Ayanna Witter Johnson
June 2010
In collaboration with Serious, Dartington hosted composer, vocalist and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson in a 4-day residency, culminating in a public performance.

Serious – Move on up

In collaboration with Serious, Dartington hosted a professional development programme for black musicians.

Harrison Birtwistle – Theatre of Illusion
August 2010
During the 2010 Dartington International Summer School, Harrison Birtwhistle brought together a group of established professionals and young emerging artists to explore a new way of developing music theatre. Download details

In residence for a week with her vocal ensemble and the Elysian Quartet, rehearsing for performances at Edinburgh Festival and running workshops at the summer school. Download details

Re:charge, Re:mind, Re:frame
October 2010
In partnership with Dance in Devon, The Works Cornwall and Plymouth Dance: an intensive professional development week for emerging South West based choreographers and dance practitioners.

Whaletone Opera
October 2010
A residency with students of South West Music School collaborating with composers Hugh Nankivell and Makoto Nomura, and choreographer Jules Laville. The residency was focused on the creation of Whaletone Opera with guest artists from The Place CAT scheme and Sage Gateshead’s Young Musician’s Programme, and young people from local primary schools.

Graham Fitkin

Graham Fitkin and his band were in residence working on material for their UK tour. The residency included open rehearsals for students of Devon Academy of Performing Arts, and performances for invited audiences and members of the public.

Richard Alston Dance Company

An educational residency with the Company involving a wide range of dancers and students in workshops and a lecture demonstration. Download details

Ben Mellor
December 2010
Ben Mellor presented an in progress version of his new work Climate Change Myths following a short residency here at Dartington. Key to this residency was the time Ben and Dr. Stefan Skrimshire spent with staff and participants of Schumacher College.

Emerging dance artists Lewis Wilkins and Scott Jennings were in residence creating new work for Resolution! to be performed at The Place.

A research and development residency for collaborators Rosanna Irvine and Katrina Brown.
