Black Hair contemporary music ensemble is known for innovative and exciting performances that explore the innate theatre of musical expression and the interaction between voices and instruments. A recent reviewer put it like this: “In music theatre’s early days, some 35 years ago, we were often confronted by musicians trying to act or actors trying to play. Black Hair, one of the sleekest ensembles around, reminded us … that those times are gone, for good…. Moral: all music is theatre”. Black Hair collaborate closely with composers to develop pieces that are colourful and dramatic. This evening’s programme is made up entirely of rich and diverse contemporary pieces, many by young British and Irish composers. Some are extremely delicate, almost secretive, others raucous and confrontational.

Black Hair takes its name from the Japanese ghost story by the 19th century writer Lafcadio Hearn, upon which their director Roger Marsh based his song of the same name. The group was formed in 1995, and performs regularly in the north of England and at festivals in Europe. During their visit to Dartington, ensemble members will be working with Dartington Plus, running music theatre workshops in local schools, and with Dartington College of Arts, workshopping student compositions.
