Calling the Gifted and Talented - South West Music School is Now Recruiting!

Dartington led project South West Music School is opening its doors for a second year, intent on uncovering the most exciting young musicians from across the region and significantly boosting their chances of making a career in the music industry.

Director, Lisa Tregale says, “We are looking for new students with a combination of potential and musical passion, as well as exceptional talent. We would be delighted to hear from young musicians between the ages of 8-16 who wish to dedicate a significant amount of time to developing their instrumental and musical skills. The school is inclusive and open to all, regardless of musical or personal background.”

South West Music School has just completed its first year and has already helped 15 young musicians explore and build on their musical potential, giving them the opportunity to develop their talent and work with some of the top instrumentals and composers in the industry.

13-year-old Paul Fraser said, “South West Music School has changed my life. It has provided me with so many opportunities such as starting piano lessons, getting an advanced teacher for my instrument (recorder) and learning about general all-round elements of music and performance.”

South West Music School is delivered through a regional partnership between Dartington Plus, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Federation of Music Services South West, Wells Cathedral School and Wiltshire Music Centre.

”Dartington Chief Executive Vaughan Lindsay said, “South West Music School is aimed at catching exceptionally talented young musicians who are not reaching their full potential in mainstream education. The virtual school runs in addition to normal schooling, providing a package of specialist educational support consisting of mentoring, individual tuition and development and residential projects. This is progressive education at its best the heart of the Dartington ethos.”

Luke Steven (Drum Kit) “South West Music School has provided me with fantastic, top quality instrumental teachers who are helping me to progress, fast! Since I’ve been on South West Music School I’ve been introduced to different styles of music which I hadn’t experienced before.”

The School currently has fifteen new places up for grabs for the learning year 2008/09. Closing dates for applications is Friday 9 May 2008 and all details of application and audition process can be found by visiting www.swms.org.uk or by contacting 01803 847011.
