Excellent!

15th July 2008, Saddler’s Wells Theatre, London
A unique gathering of the most talented young dancers and musicians of a generation.

Taking place at Sadler’s Wells Theatre on 15 & 16 July 2008 Excellent! is a gala performance to celebrate the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ (DCSF) Music and Dance Scheme, and the achievements of the country’s most talented young dancers and musicians – including pupils of the South west Music School.

On the first day over 350 young people will come together to perform pieces created especially for the event. Taking place throughout the foyer and outdoor spaces and in the main auditorium, performances will include collaborations between musicians and dancers, a jazz ensemble, a piper, classical ballet, site-specific work and contemporary dance. The end of the interval will be signalled by a specially commissioned fanfare, which schools have entered a unique competition to compose and perform.

Students from the South West Music School, a Dartington partnership initiative and one of the Music & Dance Scheme’s Centres of Advanced Training, will be performing Keith Tippett’s Fishtale – a piece specially commissioned for them – alongside five dancers from Swindon Youth Dance Academy as part of Excellent!

The second day of Excellent! will be a symposium that brings together key industry figures, policy-makers and practitioners.
