Ariel Centre, Totnes
Adaptation by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod. Directed by Mavis Jones.
Written in 1860 by Charles Dickens but reclaimed for a contemporary audience in this vibrant new stage adaptation, this classic tale of the orphan Pip’s journey from childhood to becoming a gentleman lays bare the tissue of lies and guilt in Dickens’ least sentimental love story. Originally performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2005, here the adaptation is performed by local community dramatic society, The Playgoers of Dartington Hall.
“Great Expectations has always been my favourite novel. First and foremost, it is a tremendous yarn, a mystery thriller and also a poetic epic. It deals with our ‘expectations’, our aspirations that make us human, make us noble and make us miserable. It is a story that brings out the adult in each of us, and also the child in each of us.” Playwright Declan Donnellan
