Torbay and the South West Music School at Dartington have been selected to host the National Youth Jazz Collective (NYJC) later this year. These organisations will also be working in partnership with Cuthbert Mayne School and Devon Music Service.
Funded by Youth Music the NYJC is an exciting initiative that will bring renowned jazz musicians and jazz educators to Dartington and Torbay to lead workshops for young people and development sessions for professional jazz musicians and teachers.
Alongside the workshops there will be a sessions of free professional jazz performances for the students and members of the public to attend.
Sessions will be held at Cuthbert Mayne, Trumlands Road Torquay on:
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December 2008 and Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March 2009.
And at Dartington Hall, Totnes on:
Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January and Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March 2009.
Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Jeanette Richards said: “We are delighted to be one of only five locations in the country and, alongside Dartington, the only one in the South-west to be selected to host this prestigious event.
“This provides a very unique opportunity for our budding musicians to learn from the best and further their musical talents for the future.”
Events will be split into two groups, workshops for under 18s and professional development sessions for over 18s. Anyone living in the South-West is able to apply, however, priority will be given to those living in the Torbay and Devon area.
Lisa Tregale, Director of South West Music School said: “By hosting the NYJC, we can promote and support jazz education at all levels in the South West, provide further opportunities for our musical emerging talent and develop a strong partnership with Torbay Council and Devon Music Service.”
Those interested in taking part are being encouraged to register an interest in the event at admin@swms.org.uk, before the official application process starts at the end of September – further details will be publicised nearer the time.
Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Anna Tolchard said: “The council is keen to support initiatives such as this, which encourages children and young people to explore and develop their interest in music. It is also a wonderful opportunity for young people in the Bay to be inspired by musicians who are already an expert in their field and I look forward to welcoming the group to the Bay.”
