Sharing the Film Collection and Getting Involved
Viewing & Cataloguing
Only vague lists of what is in the collection are currently available and it is crucial that we are able to properly sort and catalogue the films so that they can be appropriately referenced and married with the paper records already in the archive. Once the films are appropriately conserved and have been stabilised, it will be possible to view them to see what is there. This is likely to be a long process and it is not yet clear how long it will take.
Digitisation
Once the film stock is stable and stored appropriately, the film itself needs to be digitised so that it can be accessed and used more readily. This will be achieved through high quality transfer from the film to DVD and professional editing.
Access
Once the film is in digital format, it will be stored on a server to make it more accessible. It will also be given its own digital database that will allow the public to search for and watch clips of the films via the Internet. Copies of the films will also be available for sale in order to contribute to our ongoing charitable work.
Work already undertaken has shown how the film collections can be used to inform and support current charitable activities such as the South West Music School residential in February 2009 when young musicians composed pieces to selected archival footage. As the film becomes available it will be shown in a series of public presentations in the Barn Theatre so that people can see what has been achieved and can become involved in the project.
