University Exchange Programme will Support Creative Talent

Dartington College of Arts

The Dartington Hall Trust is working closely with University College Falmouth (incorporating Dartington College of Arts) to enhance the creative career opportunities that are available to arts graduates.

Peter Boyden, Director of Arts for The Dartington Hall Trust said, “One of the most pressing issues for the arts in the UK is the challenge of converting a creative degree into a creative career. Therefore we are collaborating with University College Falmouth (UCF) and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), one of America’s foremost arts universities, to explore new ways of working that further enhance graduate potential and help them forge sustainable careers in the ever competitive creative sector.”

The Dartington Hall Trust and University College Falmouth are sending a delegation of six, highly respected arts educators from the College’s Dartington and Falmouth Campuses to meet colleagues in LA this month for a week-long exchange. With specialisms in Fine Art: Contemporary Practice and Research into Art, Nature & Environment; Music; Choreography; and Theatre, the team will hold a series of discussions and workshops with Faculty Heads at CalArts and other American arts education institutions.

Participants have been tasked with exploring new education models aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills in artists. These skills will help prepare the artists of tomorrow for sustainable and valuable careers in the arts in a way that complements their aspirations and area of specialism.

This visit is the first step in an exchange programme that will provide invaluable additional support to emerging artistic talent on both sides of the Atlantic.

Rector of University College Falmouth, Professor Alan Livingston said, “Following our merger with Dartington, this visit presents a fantastic opportunity for the College and The Dartington Hall Trust to work together on a very real and pressing issue in arts education. The exchange will offer a unique opportunity to develop educational models that will benefit emerging artists at both regional and international levels – and ultimately boost our creative economy.”
