This is a complicated philosophical thriller and meditation on modern varieties of evil. Simon Kessler is a corporate psychologist working in the ‘human resources’ department of the French branch of SC Farb, a German petrochemical company. A high-ranking official, Karl Rose, assigns Kessler the delicate task of investigating the mental state of company CEO Matthias Just who seems haunted by something in his and the company’s past that is linked to the Holocaust. Kessler insinuates himself with the older man by suggesting the reformation of the company’s classical quartet in which Just – a trained musician – had once performed.
