12 year old Nim lives on a desert island with her scientist father, her animals and her books. When her father mysteriously disappears Nim needs help and sends a SOS e-mail to her literary hero, Alex Rover, pleading for assistance. Little does Nim know that Alex Rover is a woman (Jodie Foster). An agoraphobic who never leaves the house, Alex decides she has to take on the persona of her fictional character to get to Nim’s Island and help.
