The most tender and poignant depiction of school days since Gregory’s Girl, Son of Rambow is a treat that you do not want to miss. It’s 1982 and schoolboy Will is having a hard time coping with his father’s death. Being raised by his mother in a strict Plymouth Brethren family where TV and radio are deemed a pernicious influence Will is forced to turn to illustrating his own escapist fantasies to keep himself amused. But when his pal Lee shows him a pirate copy of First Blood, Will is blown away.

The pair decide to enter the Screen Test film-making competition with their own ‘re-imagining’ of the Stallone film. Utilising whatever props their average secondary school can muster they are further bolstered by the Gallic flare of Didier, a French exchange student and his adoring entourage of admirers. A perfect counterpoint to the more gritty This is England, Garth Jennings’ film is no less authentic, telling its warming tale of 80s adolescence with a refreshing visual flare.
