While Jacques Vergès may not actually ‘advocate’ terror, many would claim the contrary, given that as an outspoken attorney, he’s argued in defence of Klaus Barbie, Pol Pot, Carlos the Jackal and others. Barbet Schroeder is understandably intrigued by this confirmed anti-colonialist who as a seemingly leftist young lawyer during the Algerian War of Independence decided to defend freedom fighters like Djamila Bouhired, whose actions inspired The Battle of Algiers. Vergès even married Bouhired… before he vanished without trace for eight years, a disappearance he still refuses to explain.
