Based on the popular novel by John Buchan, this was one of Hitchcock’s own favourite films and Richard Hannay is the classic Hitchcockian hero, an ordinary man who becomes inadvertently embroiled in the world of murder and foreign agents. Robert Donat must go on the run to uncover the truth and clear his name, escaping across the Forth Railway Bridge and later pursued across Rannoch Moor by both the police and members of the spy ring he’s out to break. Witty and suspenseful, it also features trademark Hitchcockian flourishes, such as the sound cut between a lady’s scream and the whistle of a departing train.
