Events throughout the year…

Dartington Cider Press Centre is so much more than just a shopping centre – we hold a host of events throughout the year to interest everyone – whether its meeting a local author at their book launch, viewing one of the many artist exhibitions, learning more about collectable ceramics and artifacts, treating yourself to at a designer jewellery launch, indulging in the many food tasting events or taking advantage of a special promotion.

Children are not forgotten either – during the holidays we often hold children’s activities from face painting and story telling, to duck races and outdoor games. At Christmas time The Toyshop is delighted to have special visits from Father Christmas who meets as many children as possible during this stay.

“Colour Connections” New Exhibition Thursday 05 August – Sunday 19 September

Starting this month we are delighted to be hosting our newest exhibition in the new Craft Gallery. Colour Connections is the coming together of four artists, each a specialist in their own field, who overlap and unite through shared creative processes. Bold use of colour, so evocative of natures ever changing landscapes, demonstrate an underlying similarity in their interpretation of nature and illustrate a mutual respect for the world around them.

The designers on display are as follows:

Ruth Ball – Enamellist
Captivated by the alchemy of colour and the versatility of enamel, Ruth Ball produces a wide variety of artefacts. The creation of her fine jewels and objects, in which she specialises in champlevé, cloisonné and painted enamel miniatures, to the more unique artworks, highlight an individual style. All illustrate the potential of enamel as a medium for contemporary design and applied art.

Mary Brodie – Textile artist
Here is a preview from the artists biography.
Colour is an important influence in the way I look at the world, and my making is organic in process. I work naturally and follow the flow of colours I find.

There are no rules to what I do and each work is a development of collecting colours found in fine and natural fabrics which are over stitched, manipulated and bound together to create painterly pieces in cloth. The developed works have meaning in there imagery and the abstraction helps to form for me a remembered sense of place or time.

Ulla Huttunen – metal smith
Finnish metalsmith, Ulla Huttunen is a specialist of enamel work. Residing in the middle of the woods of central Finland, Ulla takes much inspiration from being in such close proximity to nature, the richness of which is wholly influential in her designs.

Ulla’s enamel and wood pieces are the coming together of two artisans and two materials. Collaborating closely with woodworker Arto Salminen, Ulla creates unique items, the delicate smooth lightness of metal combined with the honest strength of wood.

Clare Crouchman – Ceramic artist
Here is a preview from the artists biography.
In my work I draw upon the intricate shapes and textures in the landscape for inspiration. I also reference cities, mapping, mazes and labyrinths.

I am particularly attracted to rhythmical and repetitive patterns that repeat themselves naturally on both a large and small scale.

My choice of materials and working methods are crucial to the desired outcomes. Collographs and collage produce a strong, spontaneous and direct image. Ceramic materials go through a series of transformational processes, paralleling those of the natural world, which bring a strong physical dimension to my work.

The exhibition begins on Thursday the 5th of August with a preview evening in the New Craft Gallery from 6pm until 7.30pm. The exhibition will be on display for six weeks until the 19th of September.
