The Dartington Hall Trust and the Western Morning News are delighted to be working together to launch their first South West Photographer of the Year Competition – hunting out the most exciting photography talent in the South West and giving them the creative opportunity of a lifetime and a fantastic chance of launching their professional career.
The new ‘Photographer of the Year’ will be asked to create a comprehensive and dynamic photo archive of The Dartington Hall Trust and the charity’s pioneering work in the arts, social justice and sustainability.
The competition is a unique and exciting opportunity for an emerging photographer and a great chance for The Dartington Hall Trust to support exceptional local talent. The winner will be selected by an expert panel for their ability to take innovative, pioneering, experimental and courageous photographs.
Open to emerging talent throughout Devon and Cornwall – you will need to be over 18 and a pioneering individual with lots of ideas. We are specifically looking for photography students coming out of college or university, or highly talented amateurs with a strong desire to become professional.
Step 1 Closing date 7th June 2008

We also want to know a bit about you and why you want to win this competition. Remember keep it snappy.
A selection of the entries will be featured in the Western Morning News.
Step 2 The final Shoot Out (23 June tbc)
The top 5 entrants will then be invited to spend a fantastic day on the Dartington Hall estate at the end of June, where they will take pictures of each of the charity’s 5 areas of work – the arts, social justice, sustainability, enterprise & the place.
The photographer who, in the judging panel’s opinion, most successfully captures all 5 areas of Dartington’s work will be our winner and the South West Photographer of the Year.
The winner will be announced on 7 July
You will get a highly sort after paid commission to work as the onsite photographer at Dartington for one year (2 days a month) on specialised projects, diverse activities and performances.
The bursary will run from August 2008 – August 2009 and all travel, food and accommodation will be paid – including free access to all events and performances.
You will leave Dartington with a high quality and eclectic portfolio, the best of which will be exhibited at Dartington’s new Welcome Centre.
You will be given the opportunity to work alongside professional local photographers and artists, who can provide real career’s advice and professional expertise.
Your pictures will have a permanent place in the famous Dartington archive and will become a significant part of the estate’s prominent history.
The winning pictures and a profile of the winner will be featured in the Western Morning News – along with the potential for follow up features.
