[Dartington International Summer School] Chamber music group wanted!

I went to Dartington this summer and loved everything about it; however, if I come back next Summer I'd very much like to find people to play chamber music with me in a pre-arranged group, where we've agreed which music we will play a good six to eight weeks in advance and are roughly the same standard. I work full time (not in music), so can't learn things quickly. I'm an OK sightreader and would be happy to do some "playing through" but am much more interested in really getting to grips with something I have already learnt reasonably well, under the regular guidance of one of the coaches.

I am a diploma (but not professional) standard pianist, and would be happy to play with wind or string players. In an ideal world I'd find people who live in or near London who might like to continue playing when we get home, on an occasional basis.

My preference is for week 5, but week 4 is probably OK.

Will wait to hear back!!

[Set up inter-generational activities in the arts] Age related activities

Having worked in secondary education for a long time, I think the idea of having activities that are not segregated by age is long overdue. Dartington would certainly be the place to pioneer such work. The instinct would suggest activities through ability as the obvious choice, although my preference would be to avoid that as well and create activities that enables learning through working with more able/experienced artists regardless of their age. Perhaps some pilot events in different arts disciplines would be the way forward?

This will be my first DISS - despite being an ex-Dartington student. I am really looking forward to it although I have found some aspects a little daunting!

I just want to say a BIG thankyou to Sam McCaffery for taking the time and having the patience to answer all my queries and for tolerating my many emails! Everything is now crystal-clear, thank you Sam!

I will be taking part in vocal ensemble classes and singing for Emma Kirkby during week 2.

Hi, just to follow up my separate posting, we have a a semi-formed group to play the Trout and Hummel Piano Quintets and would love to be joined by an additional violin or viola player (our existing violin/viola will just cover the part that is missing) and we need a pianist.

As explained one of the Week three tutors has volunteered to coach our ensemble so it's worth joining us!. I can be emailed directly at cc.dann@btinternet.com.

We welcome non-uk participants. One of our cellists is German and I speak decent French and German as well. The professional pianist we rehearse with at home is Romanian!

Hi, I am attending Week 3 of the Summer School and am in search of a violinist and a pianist to join a group of us who have been learning with a chamber music tutor in North London these two piano quintets over the last few months - our ensemble specialists in quintets that include a double bass. So far we have

Double bass (me)
Cello x 2 (two of my mates)
Viola (my daughter)

I have full sets of parts and will organise booking a room and may even be able to persuade one of the Dartington Masterclass tutors I know to give us a few tips. If you are interested (and happy to have two violas if there is a viola player out there wanting to double up -violinists tend to swim alone) let me know (my email is up there) and I will see what availability the tutor has and get our rooms booked as soon as we can.

Looking forward to some fun chamber music

Cheers

Hi Lyndsay

If you have been accepted to be a steward this year then you should have been sent a list of duties and responsibilties. If you have not received this then please let me know and I will get one in the post to you.

As for how much time you will have for courses, obviously your stewarding duties come first but the majority of these are for the evening concerts and therefore you will have the days to yourself to participate in courses. However, there are a selection of the more popular courses that we ask stewards to check tickets for and therefore you would be required to work for some parts of the occasional day. The Chief Steward will go through the duties with you at the start of the week and will try and accommodate as many people as possible.

Your accommodation is in Foxhole Courtyard which is where you will have breakfast, your lunch and dinner however are served at Higher Close.

Best wishes

Hi,

What's it like for stewards? How much time do we get to participate in the courses. Also, where do we stay e.g. which block?
Thanks a lot,

Hi Klang

Sorry I have taken so long to reply to you. Trogs get very little spare time due to the nature of the job but when they do they generally spend it taking care of themselves, catching up on sleep, having a drink in the bar or going to a concert.

There really is very little spare time though so the best advice is to pace yourself through the week/s that you are there so as not to burn out.

Hope that helps.
