According to initial confirmation, Dartington has secured a 2.7% increase in Arts Council funding for the next 3 years positioning the charity as one of the top centres for creative excellence in the UK.
Chief Executive Vaughan Lindsay said, “We are delighted to learn of the Arts Council intention to continue our funding for another three years. This is a testament to the work of the charity over the last three years in developing innovative arts activities across the region and is a vote of confidence in our future plans.”
If agreed the recommended award will be for a minimum of £650,000 per year from April 2008 to March 2011 the final decision will be confirmed when the regional council meets at the end of January 2008.
The funding will go towards the ongoing success of Dartington’s flourishing arts initiatives and partnerships, including South West Music School – a virtual education programme for gifted young musicians; the music industry symposium South West Sound and the dynamic arts regeneration programme Devon Artsculture, which offers arts practitioners in rural areas the opportunity to develop their practice and business.
Cllr John Tucker, Leader of South Hams District Council said, “Over the past four years Dartington has stepped out into the local community, greatly advancing its work with schools, colleges and talented individuals and South Hams is delighted that the charity is set to secure another 3 years vital funding from the Arts Council.”
Despite the proposed merger between Dartington College of Arts and University College Falmouth, the Dartington estate will continue to offer educational opportunities for young creative people providing the space,
Dartington continues to develop a strong working partnership with KEVICC and has recently extended its sphere of influence internationally, forging commercial and educational links through the Transatlantic Arts Consortium (TAC) in the US, which is made up of Dartington, the California Institute of the Arts and Idyllwild Arts.
Anthony Steen MP for Totnes said, “Dartington offers a unique way of life like no other for those involved in culture, creativity, music and the arts. It incubates new thinking in a sanctuary of peace and reflection. It is the creative centre of the county.”
