After the enormous success of last year’s Dartington Photographer of the Year Competition – Dartington is now working in partnership with Visit South Devon to offer the same amazing prize to two of the most innovative and ambitious photographers in the South West.

The winners will spend 2 days a month from August 2009 to August 2010 working closely with Dartington and Visit South Devon to document the work of the charity and photograph the magic of the region. They will each receive a bursary of £2,500 and be given a wide array of opportunities to build their careers and portfolios.

The competition was set up by Dartington in 2008 to support emerging photography talent on route to a professional career, while building a comprehensive photo library of the charity’s work in the arts, sustainability and social justice. The image library created by last year’s winner, 25 year old Alice Carfrae, has now had been used throughout Dartington’s online and printed publications and many of her pictures have appeared in the regional and national media.

Alice Carfrae said, “Winning the Dartington photographer of the year competition has been a massive boost to my career and I have photographed everything from large scale art performances to real life social justice situations. I highly recommend this competition to anyone who is serious about working as a photographer – it really has been the opportunity of a life time”.

During her time at Dartington, Alice has taken over 800 images for the Dartington photo library, the very best of which will be displayed throughout June in an exhibition in the Dartington Roundhouse Café. Alice will be one of a panel of 5 judges for the new competition and has also been invited back to work at Dartington this summer photographing the Dartington International Summer School.

Dartington’s Chief Executive Vaughan Lindsay said, “Alice has done a marvelous job in bringing the activities and people of Dartington to life through her sensitive and imaginative photography style. Now we are really looking forward to year 2 of the competition, working with Visit South Devon to support another two emerging photographers in their careers, asking them to create some of the most inspiring images in South Devon.”

John Stainton Chairman of Visit South Devon said, “We are really excited to be working with Dartington on this excellent venture and helping to support budding photographers. Visit South Devon are looking for exciting, vibrant and original photographs to showcase the best of what South Devon has to offer to attract visitors to the area. We want to show visitors what a beautiful, friendly and exciting place South Devon is”.
