what is the land scope project at Dartington?

About Dartington

The Dartington Hall Trust is an international centre for the generation and application of new ideas in the arts , ecology and social justice .

It has an impressive record as a partner in regional, national and international development, fostering numerous activities in education, the arts and crafts, agriculture, social welfare, business creation and ecology. Recent achievements include Schumacher College , as the focus of the Trust’s interest in ecological studies, and Dartington Plus , a national centre for excellence in music and the arts. Many earlier successes on and off the Estate now flourish independently.

All Dartington Estate activities stem from the vision of the founders Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst to bring about economic and cultural regeneration in a rural environment, and to create the right conditions for an ‘abundant life’.

The land scope project is a new manifestation of that ideal.

About the land scope project

The land scope project is a new flagship initiative of the Dartington Hall Trust.

The aim is to promote small-scale, innovative and financially viable ventures related to sustainable land use on a variety of sites within its 1,200 acre estate in South Devon.

We are interested in attracting innovative ventures across a diverse range of land-related activities. This diversity may encompass experiments in new types of energy crops, bio-fuel ventures and also include art, design and music projects inspired by nature.

The land available includes agricultural land, woodlands, conservation areas and craft and industrial workshop space . The Dartington Hall Trust has defined the scope of the use of the land, in terms of a set of project selection criteria and the terms of the Dartington offer .

We call the land scope project an ‘experiment’ because we cannot predict what the outcomes will be in advance. The Dartington Hall Trust has created an offer, defined the scope and set the challenge – in the belief that pioneering people can show how to create practical and viable solution to sustainable land use. We are interested in all types of experimentation – from new sustainable technologies to innovation in social and economic models.

Our vision is to create a model for sustainable land use, not as an isolated experiment but as a demonstration centre networked with other creative communities throughout South West England and beyond.

We are looking for around five starter projects to introduce to the Estate in 2006 and are aiming for a total of 15 new ventures by 2008.
