Dartington engages in profitable commercial enterprises that complement and enhance our charitable activities.
Commercial archives record departments of the Trust which were established in 1929, which at that time included farms, poultry enterprises, orchards and a cider press, forestry operations, a sawmill and woodworking enterprises including a furniture factory as well as Dartington Hall Ltd. The Trust also established one of the earliest artificial insemination centres in Britain. In later years, operations diversified to include a bank (Dartington & Co), and Dartington Glass (now Dartington Crystal).
Since that time the organisations based on and around the Dartngton estate have undergone a considerable process of transformation. Currently commercial enterprises run through the Trust include the Totnes Bookshop, the Dartington Cider Press Centre (a visitor centre with shops, eating places and workshops) and Dartington Accommodaton and Catering Services (for leisure breaks and conference spaces at Dartington Hall).
Presently Devon ArtsCulture, and the Dartington Creative Enterprise run leading centres for the development of the next generation of creative entrepreneurs in the region. Each team is dedicated to providing creative individuals or groups with a wide range of developmental support,
widening participation in the creative and performing arts within the region and supporting creative talent in their career.
Excitingly The Dartington Hall Trust and Dartington College of Arts recently announced a feasibility study to explore the opportunity for the first rural land arts park in the UK. This will investigate the need, and possible solutions, to assisting creative talent to develop their ideas into sustainable businesses, a project which mirrors many of the original intents of the Elmhirsts who developed Dartington Hall Trust as an experiment in rural and cultural regeneration.
