The dormouse has suffered a serious decline in numbers and is officially an endangered species in the UK. Habitat change and destruction are the main causes, in particular breaking up of woodlands that leaves populations isolated and vulnertable, and the reduction of coppicing. Coppicing is an achievable task at Dartington. It links tree canopies and creates mosaics of habitats particularly valuble for dormice. The estate has joined a national survey of dormice. There is a nestbox programme and we will be running events to coordinate with the survey work providing a great chance to learn about these amazing creatures at first hand. NOTE: Dormice are a protected species and permission for a licence needs to be obtained from English Nature, before handling for scientific research can be undertaken. |
