roundhouse

Originally, this six-sided building was the threshing house for the adjoining barn.

It was constructed in the nineteenth century and then between 1933-8 it was adapted and converted by Robert Hening to be used as rehearsal and teaching space for the Barn Theatre.

Carved into the beams are the names of the two actors who originated drama teaching and performance at Dartington Hall, Michael Chekhov and Beatrice Straight, the daughter of Dorothy Elmhirst. The Round House is currently used as a café and meeting room.

The Round House is grade I listed (click here to find out more about what listing means), and open to the public as a café before film showings in the Barn Theatre, and also at weekends. It can be booked as a space for meetings.

The Round House is situated to the left hand side of the outer courtyard, just before the archway leading to the medieval courtyard. Click here for a map.
