Blacklers, Chimmels and Orchards

These three buildings were built as boarding house accommodation blocks for Dartington Hall School pupils. The first of the three to be built was Blacklers, in 1933. William Lescaze of Howe and Lescaze of America designed all three blocks, and was assisted by Robert Hening.

The second block built in 1934 was Chimmels and Orchards followed soon after in 1934/5.

The external staircases were added in the 1970s, as a fire precaution. In the 1930s, and for many years after, Dartington Hall School and Eton College were the only boarding schools in the country without dormitories, instead providing every pupil with a study-bedroom.

At Dartington the boarding houses were mixed, with a roughly equal number of boys and girls in each house.
