Church Tower
This is the tower of the former Dartington Church. It dates from the 13th Century, although the top stage was probably added in the 15th Century. The rest of the church was demolished in 1878 and some of the material was reused in the new Church of St Mary which is situated some 1200 metres to the west. A number of grave stones are still standing around the tower.
During World War II the tower was used by US forces as a radio communications base and the catwalk they built inside the top of the tower is still in place.
The tower was Grade I listed in 1961 (click here to find out more about what listing means). This area of the Hall is also listed as the site of a scheduled ancient monument (number 34872). Three of the headstones in the adjacent graveyard are also listed separately.
Located immediately to the west of the main Hall buildings. Click here for a map.
The public are allowed access to the exterior of the Church tower. However, internal access is not allowed for health and safety reasons.
