Rex Gardner designed this single-storey thatched building in 1929 as the temporary schoolroom for the nursery section of Dartington Hall School, while a more permanent home for the nursery was being built at Aller Park. Later, Willi Soukop, who sculpted both the Donkey and the Swan Fountain for the gardens at Dartington Hall, used it as a studio.
In the 1980s the Summer House burnt to the ground. It was rebuilt to its original design, although the interior layout was altered. At present it is used by the Gardens Department as a staff room.
This building is Grade II listed (click here to find out more about what listing means). The exterior of the building is open to the public. Entrance to the garden subject to £2 donation. Click here for a map.
