Warren Lane Houses

These properties were designed in the 1930s by William Lescaze and Robert Hening and built by Staverton Builders.

Numbers 3 and 4 were built in 1934. They were designed by William Lescaze. Numbers 5, 6 and 7, a row of attached properties, were built in 1935, also designed by Lescaze. Numbers 5 and 7 were built as a mirror image of each other. Numbers 8 and 9 were designed by Robert Hening and built last.

All of the houses in Warren Lane, except Warren House, recently underwent a complete refurbishment and renovation to restore them to their original state. Warren House was built in 1935 by William Lescaze, with assistance from Robert Hening, and is a superb example of an international modern style house.

Warren House was built for Kurt Jooss as teaching space and accommodation for the Ballet Jooss which was based on the Dartington Hall Estate between 1934 and 1940. Later it was for many years the home of Peter Cox, the Principal of Dartington College of Arts, and latterly it was the base for the Dartington Social Research Unit.

These buildings are Grade II listed (click here to find out more about what listing means).

There is no public access to these buildings as they are let to the general public. Warren House is currently used as offices for the Dartington Hall Trust.
