Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin and Prokofiev’s ‘film cantata’ Alexander Nevsky give a distinctly Russian flavour to the week. They are complemented by Shostakovich’s great suite of settings of Michelangelo, concluding an exploration of settings of the artist’s remarkable poetic writing. David Bedford creates a work to unite the Summer School and its RockShop, whilst our perennial Tango romantically embraces the conclusion of this 60th season. Three score years and then…

ONE WEEK COURSES

Choir

Orchestral Workshop

Director Richard Heason
The orchestral workshop will be working on music from the orchestral suites for Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Some of the work will be played by full orchestra and some will be specially arranged for groups who are with us during the week. Alongside this project the orchestral workshop will also be taking part in David Bedford’s exciting new commission.

Chamber Choir

Director Jeremy Walker
The chamber choir will explore the rich and complex sounds
of 16th and 17th century choral music by composers such
as Gabrieli, Purcell and Gesualdo, and will discover how these
early works have gone on to inspire composers in our own
time. This will be a small, balanced choir of experienced
singers and participants will be chosen by audition at the

particularly focussing on contemporary music including
that of composer-in-residence, Peter Maxwell Davies. Groups
and individuals wishing to take part should submit a CV
and recording with their application.

Composition for Beginners

Director Peter Copley
This is a practical course for those interested in composing
music of any genre and will concentrate upon the skills
common to all composition, such as melody construction,
harmonic progression and instrumentation. The course is
designed to welcome beginners and interested listeners.
No previous composing experience is necessary, although
basic music literacy is an advantage. Please bring to the
class any instrument you play (at whatever level) and
manuscript paper. At the end of the week, there will be an
informal concert of music composed in the course of the week.

Tango Music & Dance

Directors Laura Hanson & Carlos Morera
Tango is a complex system of concepts, images, sounds,
words & practices, some of them ritual ones. It is a unique
form of improvisation and expression, and a way to find
cultural identity.
The course will include lessons in both music & dance
separately. The dance classes are for beginners and
anybody with proper shoes (no rubber soles) is welcome.
In the music workshop no previous experience of Tango
is necessary but instrumentalists need some sight reading
ability to form a tango orchestra. Participants should commit
for the whole week in order to prepare for a Tango Ball with
live orchestra.

RockShop

Director Herbie Flowers
Herbie and his team of 14 top professionals from the world
of contemporary music, rock, pop, folk and jazz, return to help
participants create their own music. Lyrics and chord charts
are written, instrumental and backing vocal arrangements
are sorted out, supervised rehearsals in fully equipped spaces
begin, and before you know where you are, you have written
a song or two, are probably in three or four bands, and are
on stage enjoying every moment in the spotlight on Friday’s
