A History of Dartington International Summer School

Dartington is one of the oldest and most famous music Summer Schools in the world – Britten, Copland, Stravinsky, Maxwell Davies, Du Pre, Rattle, Ades… its list of alumni really does read like a Who`s Who of music. To celebrate its illustrious history, plans are going forward for a book to be published on the history of the Summer School, to mark its first 60 years, and to look forward to the next. Written by artistic director, Gavin Henderson and archivist, Jeremy Wilson, and supported by the Summer School Foundation, the book will chart the story of the Summer School, from its earliest days at Bryanston, through its flourishing at Dartington, under the direction of William Glock, Peter Maxwell Davies and now, Gavin Henderson. It will be illustrated with a rich tapestry of photos and anecdotes, so if you have material that you believe might be worth including, please do contact summerschool@dartington.org, although we may not be able to include everything in the book! Publication is planned for Summer 2009.

Website Forum

We are currently in the early stages of developing a website forum, where you will be able to keep in contact with friends from previous summers, ask questions, post comments, organise travel arrangements with fellow participants and make suggestions for future years. This is planned to be up on the website by mid-February, so watch this space!

Dartington Hall Donkey

As many of you will know, our friend the Dartington Hall Donkey sculpture had an unfortunate accident during a storm at summer school in 2007, and had to be taken away for recuperation. We are pleased to announce that he is now back at Dartington and is already looking forward to seeing you all in the summer!
