The French flavour continues this week – with the choir taking on Gounod’s lush and expansive Messe Solennelle together with Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloë. We welcome the brilliant young violinist Chloë Hanslip – last with us as a student.
There are a number of new works – including the world première of Benjamin Lees’ Piano Trio no 3, and works commissioned by Summer School for Stephen Gutman.
The ever popular world of Tango is brought to life, by Laura Hansen and Carlos Morera, with Jonny Gee – who also gives a Jazz night with friends.

Gounod
Messe Solennelle
Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé is widely regarded as one of the greatest of the composers works, containing some of the most passionate and extraordinary harmonies of musical impressionism. The work tells the story of the love between the goatherd Daphnis and the shepherdess Chloé, based on the romance by the early Greek writer Longus. Sometimes claimed to be ‘the most beautiful setting of the Mass ever composed’, Gounod’s ‘Solemn Mass of St Cecilia’ abundantly combines graceful melody and moving harmonisation.
