Donate to the summer school onlineSummer School Week Four Concerts - 15 August to 21 August

IMPORTANT: Tickets for these concerts are not available to book online – click here for concert booking information

We begin a two week residency by the distinguished Japanese composer Somei Satoh. We are delighted to welcome Sir Charles Mackerras to conduct Haydn’s Creation. Sir Charles was last at Summer School in 1965.

The Henschel Quartet return after their huge impact in 2008, together with the Japanese viola player Kazuki Sawa – for the recently discovered string quintet by Max Bruch. In a lighter vein, Herbie Flowers once again convenes the Dartington Light Orchestra.

Originally inspired by the oratorios of Handel, and considered by many to be Haydn’s masterpiece, The Creation depicts the making of the world as described in the Book of Genesis. The text is taken from Genesis itself, the Biblical book of Psalms, and Milton’s Paradise Lost. Haydn said that: “I was never so devout as when I was at work on The Creation; I fell on my knees each day and begged God to give me the strength to finish the work”. There will be an extended interval at 6.30pm. The Creation will continue at 8.15pm.
