Dartington Honors Brian Goodwin

Article date: Friday July 17 2009

We write to tell you that our dear friend and colleague Professor Brian Goodwin, a long standing and hugely respected lecturer at Schumacher College, died on Wednesday 15 July after losing his battle with cancer – he was 78.

Brian, who has been teaching at Schumacher College for 12 years, fell off his bike while cycling to work and broke his femur. It is believed his death was the result of the additional strain caused by the injury.

Brian was a founder of the MSc in Holistic Science at Schumacher College and contributed to numerous of the College’s most successful short courses. Before his time at Dartington, he was Professor of Biology at the Open University, with an academic career that combined biology with mathematics in the study of evolution and development.

During his career he has worked at universities and research institutes in the UK and around the world sharing his exceptional ideas that were, in many ways, ahead of their time.

Brian was recently married and his death has come as a shock to all his friends, family and colleagues and I am sure will you will join me in wishing them our sincerest condolences at this very sad time.
