About this course

Immerse yourself for a week in the vibrant and creative community of Schumacher College on the Dartington Estate in Devon. 

Inspired by the experimentalism and innovation in art practice that has animated this place for almost 100 years.This radical legacy is reimagined afresh through the eyes ecological processes, movement through, with and as nature, drawing on the energy of the river Dart, and developing new practices that incorporate biodiversity, life, and the natural world. You’ll come away with a host of ideas to help reshape your practice in response to the issue raised by the climate crisis. 

You will have the opportunity to attend daily sessions led by our resident faculty on a variety of topics that may include as complexity, phenomenology, aesthetics and economics, and experimental painting techniques, as well as developing strategies for working with more-than-human entities as a collaborator. You can also avail yourself fully of our wide range of facilities including our gardens, library, meditation room, kitchens, as a member of our learning community. 

Overall this course aims to create some space for you to sit with your own creative practice as well as explore ecological ideas in a supportive environemnt. The course is also designed to give artists and creatives a root in to exploring in further depth the exciting and innovative ideas that form the basis of teachings at Schumacher College.

By the end of the course, you will have been encouraged to begin developing a new body of engaged and expressive work. You will have gained confidence in exploring the near endless possibilities of ecological phenomena to generate art, and the role of process as a key element in making your practice more sustainable. You will also have become increasingly comfortable in making personal critical judgements and taking control of the direction of your work. 

You will be encouraged to explore and make use of the beautiful grounds and surrounding landscape and of course the River Dart.
