About this event
London-based pianist Eliza McCarthy makes her Dartington debut with a programme of new and experimental music. This intimate, late-night concert begins with a Nocturne by Kit Downes, written specially for Eliza, and also includes music by acclaimed New York composer Caroline Shaw, Gabriella Smith’s Imaginary Pancake, and a special guest appearance by fellow pianist Rolf Hind for the two-piano Hallelujah Junction by John Adams, inspired by an American road sign.
About the performers
Winner of the 2013 British Contemporary Piano Competition, Eliza McCarthy performs in concert halls, art galleries, theatres and living rooms across the UK, Europe and US as a soloist and band member.
She has had the great pleasure of working with, commissioning, premiering and recording works by many living composers including John Adams, Thomas Adès, George Crumb, Tansy Davies, Donnacha Dennehy, Andrew Hamilton and Laurie Spiegel. She regularly collaborates with Mica Levi (Under the Skin, Jackie) and their album ‘Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall’ was released in 2018 on Slip. She was featured on Alex Groves’ debut EP Curved Form (No. 4) which was released in March 2019. As an ensemble member she can be heard performing with Decibel and Ireland’s leading new music group Crash Ensemble.
Alongside her life as a performer, Eliza teaches Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and University of Birmingham helping performers engage with fear, anxiety and depression. She is also a professor at GSMD teaching contemporary repertoire studies to pianists.
Rolf Hind has worked closely with living composers across a broad range of styles: from John Adams and Tan Dun, to Ligeti and Lachenmann; Xenakis and Messiaen, to Simon Holt and Judith Weir.
Born in London and now living there after studies at the Royal College of Music and Los Angeles, his career has many facets. He appears regularly at new music festivals throughout Europe: in Brussels, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Darmstadt, Vienna, Strasbourg and Paris. He is in demand as a soloist with all the major BBC orchestras and plays regularly with the London Sinfonietta. Further afield he has made numerous appearances: including with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the South West German Radio Orchestra, the Stockholm Sinfonietta, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and orchestras in Holland, Italy, Ireland, Norway, France, Portugal and the US.
