About this event

We welcome this brilliant young Paris-based quartet, making their debut at Dartington this summer. Their well-planned programme is a musical feast for chamber music lovers.

Shostakovich’s shortest quartet, in memory of his first wife, is complemented by two staples of the quartet repertoire: Debussy’s elegant, early work and Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, warm-hearted masterpiece. When Leo Tolstoy heard it for the first time, he was so moved he burst into tears.

The Hermès Quartet is particularly close to Alfred Brendel, in residence this week, and collaborates with Adrian Brendel in Schubert’s String Quintet on 15 August.

“…World-class quartet playing….they will likely take their place among the top quartets of our time.” – Washington Post

Debussy Quartet in G minor Op.10
Shostakovich Quartet no.7 in F sharp minor Op.108
Tchaikovsky Quartet no.1 in D major Op.11

Don’t miss:
Thomas Gould and Friends on 14 August
Hermès Quartet playing Schubert with Adrian Brendel on 15 August
Heath Quartet on 19 and 23 August

Winners of the 2012 Young Concert Artists in New York, the Hermès Quartet made its US debut, to rave reviews, at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center. The Hermès Quartet has already been heard in many prestigious European venues. They have been presented at the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, as well as in performances in Argentina and Japan. They have been frequent guest artists at music festivals around the world such as the Mantova Chamber Music Festival, Festival de l’Orangerie de Sceaux, Festival de Radio France et Montpellier, Festival de Colmar, the Krzyzowa Music Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

About us

The Dartington Experiment began over 90 years ago when our founders, Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, set out to build a community inspired by the idea of a ‘many-sided life’.

Today, we believe that their vision is more relevant today than ever before. We aim to be a place where people can realise their individual and collective potential, and are given a chance to connect with themselves, each other, and the environment.

Across the estate, a programme of events and visitor attractions operate year-round; artists, makers, farmers, educators, craftspeople and entrepreneurs live and work; and the community continues to ‘learn by doing’, finding inspiration in the Elmhirst’s progressive ideas and experimental approach.
