About this course
During this course, students will have the opportunity to create and decorate work using a range of handbuilding and slip decorating techniques. The emphasis will be on simplicity, on a loose and dynamic approach to earthenware, and on leaving things alone, loosening up and developing through making.
The four days will be divided into ‘making’ and ‘decorating’ days. Dylan will introduce simple techniques everyday as starting points for the days work, and the students will have then be able to take these methods and adapt and develop them in their own directions. We will use old and new methods with clay and slip to focus on the making process rather than concentrating on the finished pieces.
We will explore different making processes, handbuilding, carving, slicing and cutting the clay. We will use slip trailers, brushes, sgraffitto: any techniques that are there to be used.
Beginners welcome – this course is suitable for all abilities.
Dylan was apprenticed to Clive Bowen at Shebbear Pottery before studying Ceramics at Camberwell School of Art. Bowen lives and works in Oxfordshire. Dylan makes slip decorated earthenware using traditional materials and techniques. The clay is thrown, carved, sliced and handbuilt, then slips are poured, trailed or brushed on. Bowen aims to capture some of the spontaneity and action of the making process. Dylan is a fellow of the Craft Potters Association and has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad.
Food and drink
On this course, lunch will be provided on Tuesday-Friday. These communal meals are a vital part of the learning experience and we strongly recommend you attend them.
Tea and coffee will be available throughout the course.
We recommend that if possible, you stay on-site during your course. All our courses are best experienced holistically: through working, relaxing, eating and staying with other course participants and tutors.

– Check-out for all departures is 11am on the day of departure.
