About this course
Join landscape artist Richard Long for dinner followed by a day of walking and talking along the beautiful River Dart.
This event celebrates Dartington’s 100-year history of artists coming together to provide a way of understanding and interpreting the world around us. They allow us to see a different perspective and to appreciate the beauty in things that we might otherwise overlook. It also celebrates the long-term friendship between Richard and Satish Kumar – Long first visited Schumacher College 20 years ago. Expect nourishing food, movement and conversation from this unique weekend.
Saturday 8th July
6.30pm – A garden-grown supper at The Old Postern with Richard, followed by fireside chat.
Sunday 9th July
9:30 – 4 pm
Walk a path together along the River Dart and make art by walking in the landscape. Through open-ended dialogue and emerging experience we will celebrate simple acts of walking as art, as freedom and as meditation. Picnic lunch, afternoon tea and scones.
on this course you will
- Have the opportunity to listen and respond to the natural world.

OUR LEARNING COMMUNITY
Our courses are part of the wider Learning programme at Dartington, and you will join a community of students on site studying at Schumacher College and Dartington Arts School as well as other short course participants, volunteers and visitors.
While you are here we invite you to take part in our learning community life by attending morning meetings, taking part in activities such as meal preparation and clearing, and evening social events. This is entirely voluntary, but participants tell us that taking part adds to their experience at Dartington.

TUTORS

Richard Long
Richard Long is a prominent English sculptor and practitioner of land art. His work derives inspiration from personal experience, geographic history, the outdoor environment and plant life. Employing natural materials like water, rocks and mud, Long creates works that trace his physical movement through space, as seen in his seminal work A Line Made by Walking (1967). Richard won the Turner Prize in 1989, received the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture, and in 2013 was awarded a CBE.
