South Devon Refugee Support Network

The Dartington Hall Trust shares the huge concern over the refugee crisis facing Europe and knows that our community, acting together, can make a real difference.

We are working closely with our partners, under the joint name of South Devon Refugee Support Network (SDRSN), to offer the vital practical support and welcome for refugees and asylum seekers in South Devon.

Below you’ll find latest updates – including a timeline of our progress to date – and information on how you can get involved. We hope you can join our collective effort. Thank you!

What are we doing to support refugees and asylum seekers?

After talking to many agencies working with refugees and asylum seekers in the region about how we can best support them at White House, we can confirm that our vision is to develop White House as a place of retreat, social inclusion and cultural connection and understanding, with the potential for emergency accommodation.

The South Devon Refugee Support Network (SDRSN) are developing a programme including a series of monthly workshops organised by Beyond Borders volunteers, and retreats organised by Embracing Refugees that bring together local people and participants from Plymouth to reduce cultural barriers and social exclusion and support people into positive activities especially meaningful work experience.

We are also investigating whether White House can be used for asylum seekers and refugees who become homeless and destitute and need short term emergency accommodation. The White House at Foxhole is not suitable for the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Programme as the accommodation is not set up as self-contained family units. However we’re currently working with the SDRSN to try to identify suitable self-contained accommodation in the local area to put forward for the programme.
