Zoom guide for our online talks and courses

Introduction

To use Zoom, you will need:

A reasonable internet connection to stream live video
Speakers or headphones

For most of our online events, all you’ll be doing is watching the guest speaker, and interacting via online chat, if you wish (see below for more on that). This means that you don’t need a webcam or microphone to take part.

First, you’ll need to download the Zoom application.

We recommend you do this well in advance of joining any online sessions.  Make sure you download it onto the device you plan to eventually join the session on.

Joining the online event

Before the event, you’ll receive the link to join – please see the event page for details of when this will happen. We’ll send this to the email address you used when registering for the talk. If you can’t find it, check your junk and spam folders.

On the device you have downloaded Zoom onto, open your emails and click the joining link.

Zoom will open, and you may be asked to provide basic registration details. These are to enable you to take part in the live chat and Q&A and won’t be used for any other purposes.

Once you’ve done this, you should see the live stream. If you’ve joined before the start time, you may be in a ‘waiting room’ or see a message saying that the host is yet to start the event. Don’t worry – keep the window open, and wait for the event to start.

Taking part in live chat/Q&A

These tools are entirely optional and allow you to engage with the guest speaker and others watching the talk. The icons are easily found at the bottom or on the right hand side of the video stream.

Q&A: This allows you to ask the guest speaker a question. The speaker may answer the question via text, or verbally in the talk. The talk moderator also selects a range of Q&As for the guest speaker to answer at the end of the talk. Not all questions can be answered for time reasons.

Live chat: This allows you to chat along in real time with other people watching the talk like yourself. None of your personal details are at risk by taking part.
