Totnes Young People’s Theatre (TYPT) is an award-winning, independent youth theatre, with a history of offering exciting opportunities for young people.
We believe that drama, creativity and playfulness build confidence, resilience and make young people dynamic decision makers and collaborators ready to roll with change, face challenge and be ready for a digital future.
During the spring/summer we devised and performed (here at Dartington’s professional studios) four ancient Greek inspired performances, including a reworking of The Odyssey.
So for Autumn 2019, we start a brand new series of drama workshops. Disguised in all the fun and games will be a creative syllabus packed full of useful acting techniques and ways of making theatre. Towards Christmas there will be an informal ‘Show ‘n’ Share’ style performance called ‘YOUTHQUAKE’; an annual festival of devised theatre.
To empower young people to express themselves.
To challenge, nurture and inspire alternative ways of thinking, doing and being in our ever-changing world and community.
To encourage taking creative risks; solo and together.
To inspire imaginative spaces and processes.
To offer affordable prices and flexible payment schemes to encourage full participation, whatever the circumstances.
“TYPT is really cool. We get to do fun stuff and learn about being in other people’s shoes.”
“It’s fun doing the plays, it’s hard work but it’s good fun when it’s all over. I got to do something I thought I couldn’t do.”
“What I like is that we get to do real acting and get good direction, which is what I wanted because I don’t enjoy singing or dancing.”
“That was so much fun. When’s our next show??”
“Developing theatrical skills aids [my] confidence and it’s just fun really. I’ve made new friends and acting is actually really cool.”
“TYPT is one of those things we need like air, food and water.”
“The standard of teaching is really good.”
“We have really appreciated the sibling discounts, thank you so much, it is the difference between coming and not coming.”
“What an eye-opening night! ‘Really good standard. So wonderful that you enable them to do this kind of stuff! And that we had the pleasure to get a taste of their viewpoint.”
“Theatre is a great way of people coming together to explore issues without even realising it. TYPT offers a professional attitude to theatre as well, so it can be seen as a valued profession to go into.”
