Dartington opens its gardens free to all members

New free membership gives everyone the chance to enjoy 26 acres of historic gardens throughout the year

We’ve listened to visitors wishing Dartington’s Grade II* listed gardens were more accessible: from Thursday 1 October the Dartington Hall Trust (DHT) will no longer charge entry for anyone who joins Dartington+, its free membership scheme.

The change opens up 26 acres of beautiful gardens to more people, more often. Visitors can return through the seasons to enjoy the gardens’ ancient trees, sculptures, sweeping views and quieter corners, without paying for a garden ticket each time.

Joining Dartington+ is free. Visitors can sign up through Dartington’s Oh My World app, which also hosts their membership. Those who choose the paid Dartington+ More tier will continue to enjoy its wider range of benefits, including free garden entry.

Robert Fedder, Interim CEO of DHT, said: 

“These gardens are a remarkable part of Dartington, and we want more people to feel they can make them part of their lives. Whether it’s a first visit with the family, a peaceful walk or a chance to see what has changed since last month, free membership makes it easier to come back whenever you like.”

The gardens have been shaped over centuries and include planting and landscapes influenced by designers Beatrix Farrand and Percy Cane. Today they are cared for by specialists with the valued help of volunteers.

Alongside the move to free entry through Dartington membership, the Trust will be leaving the RHS Partner Garden scheme at the end of the year since that scheme includes only paid-entry venues. Dartington looks forward to welcoming RHS members, through the new free membership scheme.
