The Barn Cinema
Welcome to the Barn Cinema, an independent cinema in a beautifully converted 14th century barn set in a medieval courtyard, which gives us a stunning space to share our passion for cinema.
The Barn has been running as an independent cinema for over 50 years, with a wide-ranging film programme showing the best of popular cinema for adults and children, independent releases, documentary, live opera and theatre screenings, and special events including Q&A sessions and live music. Our Screenarts programme features screenings of performances and exhibitions from world-renowned arts venues, such as the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, and National Gallery. Our aim is to offer something for everyone. Our love of film has been part of the roots of Dartington Trust. Our founders, Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, possessed a forward-thinking attitude towards film, resulting in a film archive dating back almost a century, some of which can be watched online. |
The Barn's exterior was reconstructed under the supervision of William Weir during the early 1930s. Playwright Anton Chekhov’s nephew - Michael Chekhov – worked with Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius to convert the Barn into a fully equipped theatre venue in the mid 1930s. The Barn Theatre began operating as a part-time cinema in the 1970s initially as part of the British Film Institute regional cinema network and became a full-time independent cinema in 1990s. The Barn is listed in Time Out’s top 50 independent UK and Ireland cinemas. It is also available to hire for private events and conferences.
You can book tickets online, or via our Box Office on 01803 847070, open daily from 1.30pm. The cinema is fully accessible with Blue Badge parking nearby, regular subtitled screenings, and hearing loops are available. Please call the Box Office for access assistance.
There are plenty of offers too: discounts for Dartington Members and hotel guests, reduced rates on Monday nights, family tickets and group discounts.
We are very grateful to our team of volunteers who support the cinema all year round. If you’re interested in joining us, find out more here.
We are grateful to the BFI and the Cultural Recovery Fund for Independent Cinema for their support, enabling us to reopen the Barn Cinema in 2021. Supported by funding from the BFI and the Cultural Recovery Fund
