Schumacher College acquired by Satish Kumar Foundation

Dartington Hall Trust (“DHT”, “the Trust”) and the Satish Kumar Foundation (“SKF”, “the Foundation”) are pleased to announce the independence of Schumacher College with the Foundation acquiring the business assets from the Trust for an undisclosed consideration.

It has been an amicable negotiation between the two parties. The Trust has, for the past 35 years, nourished, financed underpinned, and inspired the learning community for which the College, and all associated with it, are deeply appreciative. There would be no Schumacher College without the Trust.

How the world has changed since 1990. Humanity has come together and split apart in ways unimaginable when the College first opened, holding out hope with grit and wily determination, as well as dreaded lessons that have been taught many times before.

Cut back to its roots and refreshed by its enduring values, friends and partnerships, the new Schumacher College is emerging re-imagined and revitalised. The past is done, the path forward is for the making, and the College has an important role in creating a more spirited way together, one flourishing with an abundance and diversity of life and culture.

Commenting on the sale to SKF, Robert Fedder, interim Chief Executive Officer of DHT, said:

“We’re delighted to have reached an agreement very amicably with the Foundation, and to transfer into the correct hands a great deal of unique educational collateral and other resources built over the years as part of DHT. We wish the Foundation well in its mission for Schumacher College.”

Commenting on the purchase from DHT, John Rae chair of trustees, said:

“The College, much like DHT, has entered a period of renewal. I’m grateful to the Trust, to Satish Kumar, and to all who have animated the College over the years and will continue to do so. Guided by the lessons of the past but focused on the path ahead, the College community will translate ecological insight and social imagination into everyday practice, helping create places where people and planet thrive together. The Foundation is by their side”.
